Equivalent Raga Series

Ragas are standard scales based on which both Hindustani and Carnatic Classical music is based on. The general structure of Indian classical music starts with a composition and then ends with improvisation within that composition in both forms. For both of these, there are rules - to stay within the given scale in which is chosen. A similar concept in western classical music is that of modes.

Initially, decades ago, there was a common fused system of music across the subcontinent, which evolved into the current forms of Hindustani and Carnatic Music. Owing to this, there are now substantial differences as well as similarities between the two systems.

The objective of this project was to bridge the differences between the two systems, and to educate the artists associated with SPICMACAY about the other form of system, by making use of equivalent ragas.
